Project Star Search

Dearest 1T1,

I would like to thank the dedicated team behind Project Star Search. It would have been impossible to organise this game booth during the carnival without their help.

Special mention goes out to: (in no particular order of merit)

(1) Fiona and her photo-taking team who stayed back on Tuesday to plant the clues

(2) Ziwei especially for her hard work at the hall this afternoon - there were several occasions when she had to sort out the clues (which were in a complete mess) all by herself

(3) Norlifah and Syazwani for being such dedicated treasurers and who manned the booth to secure our finances (Norlifah even managed to check the accounts and found out that there was a group who did not pay for their game)

(4) Zunairah who tried to explain the games to potential customers

(5) Hajiran, Yaakub and Elvis who helped distribute the flyers and pamphlets

(6) Jiale, Yong Hao, Nelson, Abib for being such wonderful defenders of our game and who went round the school to check that the stars were intact. (Thumbs up for your effort!)

P.S. Yong Hao's clue was so difficult that no one could guess it.

Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to all those who came and supported us e.g. Eugene, Ivan, Frank & Yao Sheng who played the games and Azra & Hidayah our poster girls behind the counter.

To be very honest, I entered the class in a very cheerful mood today. I was looking forward to seeing you after the Hari Raya Celebrations. I had in mind to ask my Muslim students how they had celebrated Hari Raya. I also had in mind to complete discussing the comprehension paper. But halfway through all the usual chaos in class, I was deflated and lacked the steam to carry on.

1T1, please focus. There are, as I have said, only 6 English lessons left. I am running out of time and there is a lot of preparation which needs to be done for your English end-of-year examinations. Run the race. And run it well. You must pass English language - if you don't pass the examinations, we might not consider you for promotion this year.

What can you do to help? Help control your friends. Stop playing. For the next two weeks, concentrate on your schoolwork. We work hard and play hard as a class. Help each other to pass the examinations and we can plan something fun after the exams e.g. a class outing or a class barbeque.

1T1, I bet all of you are glad that the holidays are here. For those who have been ill with flu, fever, cough or whatever nasty virus, I pray you will recover during this one week break. Please take care of your health because your end-of-year examinations are coming.

Fiona, please do not be so hard on yourself. If you were to ask me what went wrong during the floorball final, I will be very honest. Most of you have tired yourselves out during the earlier games. You ran too much. If I am not wrong, there was one game that you scored 11 against a pathetic 3 from your opponents. Therefore, by the time we have entered the finals, I could see that most of you were already exhausted especially Taufiq and Zakaria.

The second reason why you guys did not win was the lack of teamwork. Most of you are above-average players. But when put together, there is very little chemistry among all of you. You do not coordinate your passes and attack well. In the face of strong players from 1N2, our chances of winning are greatly reduced.

Do not despair. We have had fun and we have done well and clinched the second prize so let's enjoy our victory too!

Guess whom I have met at the lecture this afternoon

Dear 1T1,

I met Mr Vincent Lim at Singapore Expo this afternoon and told him about our class blog. I have also given him the blog address so that he could drop by and visit all of you once in a while!

Now let me address a few issues:

1) Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. If someone does not like to be named on the class blog, then we will just remove the name. And this is what I will do. I will delete the name because we should learn to respect each other's privacy.

2) There is no need to scream your heads off at each other on the chat box. The chat box exists for a reason. It gives you a common space to communicate or to advertise your youtube videos. I do not understand why we have to post hateful, spiteful remarks at one another. If this continues, I am afraid I will have to ask Fiona and Kevin to take down the chatbox because the users are not abiding by the rules that I have set out right from the start. That is, to respect one another in the cyberspace.

3) Finally, teachers are not placed in schools or classrooms to be liked. That being said, you would still have to show basic respect to a teacher even if you do not like him or her.

4) Why are teachers angry? There are a few reasons. Most of the times a teacher is angry because he or she has set certain expectations for the class and they are not met. Anger is sometimes an expression of love as well. If one does not care for his form class, it would be impossible to make him angry.

5) Abib, Zura does look like a sheepdog, doesn't he? That was the reason why I felt in love with him. His thick coat of fur does make him look like he is from Greenland. But he is not. In fact, Zura was born in Perth, Western Australia. I do pity my dog because he has to live with that thick coat under the warm Singapore sun.

6) Wayne, thank you for your attempt to photoshop our class photo. Great job. The heart shape reminds us that we need to show more love to one another in class!

1) I do apologise for not having written on the class blog for quite an extended period of time. I am quite excited to see that Yong Hao's hamster had given birth. Or is that Abib's hamster? (Yong Hao, do you have to remove the babies from the mother when they were first born? I was told that you would have to do that or else the mother hamster will bite its babies to death. Is that true?)

2) Now that the examinations are just around the corner, I will like everyone of you to start setting academic goals for your final-year exams. I sat down with Siddiq and Zakaria last Monday to talk about their targets for end-of-year exams and I will like to sit down with more people to talk about their goals this coming Monday. Therefore, over the weekend, write down what you would like to achieve for English Language, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, and Science. Let's focus on these four subjects for the moment. On Monday, I will like to meet you one-to-one during CLASS time to talk about this.

3) And not forgetting the photos of my favourite dog - Zula! Zula was adopted by my elder brother about six years ago. He was originally meant to be a show dog but because he is an extremely greedy dog, he over-ate and as a result, he was too big for the contest. In the end, his previous owner decided to neuter him and remove his bark. (Yes, it's very sad because Zula barks without sound!) My elder brother fell in love with Zula and adopted him into our family. So here's Zula with a big hello to everyone from 1T1!

It has come to my attention that all of you are not using standard English to express yourself in the tag board and blog entries. As your English teacher, I must say this is unacceptable. FIONA, there is no such word as 'sibei' in the English dictionary. Therefore, from now onwards, I want to see efforts being made to write good English in our class blog. UNDERSTAND? :)

The day my class celebrated my birthday for me

6th August was the eventful day when my class decided to celebrate my birthday for me. I was truly thankful for this birthday surprise even though I must confess that I have caught wind of it several days ago through the help of spies from other classes.

It was comical because all of you were stationed outside the class and you tried to lock me in (from outside). It was also particularly hilarious when I told you that I am 26 this year and all of you refused to believe me.

Thank you very much for all your birthday wishes, cards and presents. Ziwei, how did you know I love Kinder Bueno? I'm a big fan of hazelnut. Kevin, your stick-figure is very interesting - I never knew I had such a diamond-shaped face. I was particularly moved by your playing of the guitar and singing too. (Thank you Firdaus for your playing too!) Both of you did a great rendition of 'Run'. (But of course, I sang better in class the last time ound.) Fiona wrote a letter and that was simply priceless.

Once again, thank you for making this 26th birthday a very memorable one for me.

Now that being said, I was also particularly upset with a few people:

1) I don't recall having seen Wayne after he carried the cake to the canteen. Wayne, where did you go? Don't you know that school ends only at 1355?

2) The monkey circus: Abib, Yong Hao, Nelson, Wei Yao, and Jia Le (?) who were running amok in the canteen as if you have just been released from imprisonment.

3) All the absentees today. I distinctly remembered having told you that you should not excuse yourself for the celebration unless you have a valid reason. If you were not ill and decided to excuse yourself just so that you can sleep in, I am afraid to say you would simply have to face up to the music when I see you on Tuesday.

Have a good long weekend and see you on Tuesday. The next four weeks would be intensive training for your English examinations on 29 Sept.

And I certainly hope you could fulfil my birthday wish this year; that is to pass the English end-of-year paper :)

My Favourite English Song

Tell you something about Mr Leong. Mr Leong is an audiophile who loves good music. Therefore, I always like to know my students through their music tastes. So far I know Azra loves to sing. She was practically having a karaoke session with Hidayah this morning. (Jia Le, of course, was complaining about having a headache.) I also know that Siddiq enjoys music from Linkin Park. Even though I'm not convinced that he has been to Linkin Park's concert. Siddiq, when was the concert?

Over the weekend, I would like you guys to share one of your favourite English songs with the class. I said one... Please don't give me ten. I said English... Therefore, I don't want Tamil, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese or instrumental music.
